COVID-19 UPDATE

Based on the advice of public health officials and our own concerns about the well-being of students and instructors, we’ve decided to move everything to the safety of online course delivery.

It was a difficult decision but we believe it is the responsible thing to do amid a resurgent pandemic with proliferating variants of concern.

What Should I Bring to the MCAT Test Day?

Preparing for the MCAT can be stressful, but knowing what to bring on the MCAT test day can help ensure a smooth experience. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you get ready.

MCAT Test Day Schedule

Arrival Time

You should arrive at your testing center by 7:30 am to allow ample time for check-in procedures before the 8:00 am start. Arriving early helps reduce stress and ensures a timely start.

Check-In Process

You must check in at the front desk, where staff will verify your ID matches your registration name exactly.

Important Note: You can update your registration details up to 24 hours before the exam.

Locker and Restroom

Choose a locker for your belongings and organize your snacks for quick access during breaks. Be sure to use the restroom before entering the exam room.

Security Screening

You will undergo a security check, including pocket checks, scanning, fingerprinting, a photo, and a signature.

Essential Items to Bring on Test Day

Valid Identification

Ensure you bring an acceptable ID, such as a government-issued license or passport. Your ID must not be expired and should match the details on your MCAT registration. This is crucial for entry into the test center, so double-check that your ID is up to date and that all details match your registration information exactly.

Food and Water

Bring snacks like granola bars and peanut butter & jam sandwiches. Ideally, you have done practice full-length exams eating these exact same foods. Pack water too. These are stored in your locker.

If you’re in a pinch, vending machines are available at some centers, so bring cash to be on the safe side. As much as possible, go for healthy & nourishing options!

Important! You cannot leave the test center once you are processed, so plan your snacks and meals accordingly.

What to Wear

Comfort is key. Check the expected room temperature at your test center and dress in layers to adjust as needed. Comfortable clothing will help you stay focused during the long hours of testing. Being comfortable while seated for many hours can make a significant difference in your concentration and overall test performance. Ideally, you will have practiced writing full-length exams in these exact clothes.

Other Permitted Items

Medical and comfort items are allowed without prior approval. These include:

  • Prescription medications
  • Eyeglasses (without the case)
  • Cushions or lumbar support
  • Auto-injectors or inhalers

Items Provided by the Test Centre

Test centers provide:

  • Writing tools: a pencil or whiteboard marker
  • Writing surfaces: paper or a whiteboard book
  • Noise reduction: earplugs or noise-canceling headphones
  • Storage locker for personal items

Prohibited Items

Items Not Allowed in the Testing Room

Electronic devices, study materials, personal items like bags and wallets, or water bottles are not allowed in the testing room.

Items Not Allowed for Use During Breaks

You may not use cell phones, electronic devices, or notes, even during breaks. You may not go through bags or purses, either. These items are prohibited from use to maintain the integrity of the exam.

Essential MCAT Test Day Tips: What to Know and Do Before You Arrive

What Should I Do the Day Before the MCAT?

Rest is vital! We cannot stress this enough. Avoid cramming the night before. Instead, relax and ensure you get a good night’s sleep.

Arrival and Check-in

Scout the testing location a day before to avoid any surprises. On test day, arrive at least 30 minutes early for ID verification and security procedures. This extra time helps alleviate any last-minute stress.

Locker Usage

Choose and organize your locker for easy access to snacks and other items. Remember, you cannot go through bags during breaks. Have your snacks and water positioned for quick access to make the most of your break time.

During the MCAT Exam

Scratch Paper Policy

You’ll be provided with a noteboard booklet and marker, or 4 sheets of paper and a pencil. Check with your test center beforehand to understand their specific policies.

Breaks and Restroom Usage

Scheduled breaks include two 10-minute breaks and one 30-minute lunch break. Unscheduled breaks are permitted, but the test timer does not stop  (except for those with accommodations). Use restroom facilities during these breaks to maximize your writing time.

Self-Care Tips

Mental and Physical Preparation

Get a good night’s sleep and eat a healthy breakfast on test day. Establish a routine during your full-length practice exams that you can repeat on test day to stay calm and focused.

Common Mistakes to Avoid on Test Day

Forgetting Essential Items

Double-check that you have all necessary documents and supplies before leaving home. Ensure your ID and other essentials are packed and ready.

Neglecting to Read the Test Center Regulations and Policies

Familiarize yourself with the test center’s policies to avoid unnecessary stress. Knowing what to expect helps you stay calm and prepared.

Arriving Late

Plan for potential delays and aim to arrive early. This buffer time helps you stay relaxed and reduces the risk of arriving late.

Voiding the MCAT

When taking the MCAT, students have the option to void their exam if they believe their performance was suboptimal, when you really don’t think you’ll get a good MCAT score. Voiding means the exam won’t be scored and medical schools won’t see the attempt, though it still counts towards the testing limit and is non-refundable.

Generally, voiding should only be considered under serious unforeseen circumstances, such as acute illness or injury, as many students feel anxious post-exam but still achieve competitive scores.

Quick MCAT Test Day Checklist

Here’s a handy checklist to ensure you’re fully prepared for test day:

  • Valid ID
  • Snacks and water
  • Comfortable clothing
  • Medical and comfort items
  • Knowledge of test center policies

By following these guidelines, you can approach your MCAT test day with confidence and focus entirely on performing your best.
