What to Expect on MCAT Test Day
Table of Contents
Taking the MCAT is stressful enough—test day shouldn’t add any surprises. Knowing exactly what to expect at the testing centre can help you stay calm, focused, and confident when it matters most.
This guide walks you through MCAT test day logistics, check-in procedures, security rules, and break policies, so you can focus on one thing: the exam.
Before You Leave for the MCAT Testing Centre
Give yourself plenty of extra time to arrive before your scheduled check-in. Testing centres are strict, and late arrivals may not be admitted.
Before leaving your house, double-check that you’ve packed:
Valid identification (required)
Water
Snacks for breaks
Any items listed in your MCAT registration confirmation email
📌 Tip: Park legally and carefully. Getting ticketed mid-exam is a plot twist nobody needs.
MCAT Check-In Process: What Happens When You Arrive
Once inside the testing centre, you’ll check in with the administrator and complete the following steps:
1. Examinee Agreement
You’ll be asked to read and sign the MCAT examinee agreement before proceeding.
2. Identification Verification (Very Important)
You must present valid, unexpired ID. The first and last name on your ID must exactly match the name used during MCAT registration.
“John” ≠ “Jonathan”
Nicknames = not allowed
Expired ID = not accepted
Most students bring:
A driver’s licence
A passport
Bringing both is a smart backup. The AAMC website lists all acceptable ID types.
3. Biometric Security Checks
You will:
Provide a digital signature
Have your fingerprints or palm vein scan recorded
Have a photo taken
Yes, it’s intense. No, it’s not personal.
Lockers, Personal Items, and Exam Room Rules
All personal belongings must be placed in a locked locker, including:
Phones
Smart devices
Watches (even non-smart ones)
Bags, wallets, keys
You’ll keep only:
Your ID
Water and snacks (stored outside the exam room)
No food or drinks are allowed inside the testing room.
Each time you enter the exam room, expect a security check (checking glasses, turning out pockets, and a metal detector scan). Once seated, you’ll be given:
A wet-erase noteboard booklet: This is a spiral-bound, laminated booklet (usually with graph lines), not loose scratch paper.
A fine-point marker: You will use this for all scratch work.
Instructions to keep your ID with you at all times.
⚠️ Crucial Note: You are not allowed to erase anything in the booklet (no wiping with fingers or tissues). If you make a mistake, simply cross it out. If you fill the entire booklet, raise your hand, and the proctor will swap it for a clean one.
MCAT Breaks: How They Actually Work
You may only leave the exam room by raising your hand and waiting for a proctor.
Scheduled Breaks
During breaks, you can:
Use the restroom
Access your locker
Eat snacks and drink water
Pay attention to the clock outside the exam room. Your next section will start automatically when the break ends—whether you’re ready or not.
💡 Pro tip: Always use the breaks. Stretch, walk, hydrate, and reset your brain. Yes, even if you “feel fine.”
Finishing the MCAT: What to Do After the Exam
Once you complete the exam and check out, you’re done.
Take a deep breath.
Do not replay questions.
Do not Google answers.
Do not spiral.
You’ll receive your MCAT score approximately one month after test day. Obsessing now changes nothing except, of course, your stress level.
