During her undergraduate degree, Elizabeth did marine biology research in Honolulu at the University of Hawaii, working on a project focused on tubeworms and understanding strategies for marine antifouling paint coating.  In 2012, she was awarded an EDEN research scholarship from Harvard University to continue her research work in Hawaii.  She also did nanomicroscopy research at the University of Toronto.

During her first summer of medicine, she worked on clinical research at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia.  Her project was focused on high-risk melanoma skin cancer patients, and improving prevention, screening, and early detection in the skin cancer hotspot of Queensland, Australia.
